A Place to Turn: Fletcher Street Cottage Secures Its Future
For many people facing hardship, knowing there's a place to turn can make all the difference.
A hot breakfast. A warm shower. A conversation with someone who cares. Support to navigate housing, health or financial challenges. For thousands of people over the past four years, that place has been Fletcher Street Cottage.
Now, the service has secured its future, with Byron Shire Council granting a 15-year licence for Fletcher Street Cottage to continue operating from its home at 18 Fletcher Street, Byron Bay.
The long-term agreement provides security for Byron Bay's dedicated daytime support hub, allowing Byron Community Centre to continue delivering essential services while planning confidently for the future.
Byron Community Centre General Manager Michelle Heuer said the licence is an important milestone for both the organisation and the wider community.
"This 15-year licence not only secures a building, but the future of a service that so many people rely on.

Since opening in 2022, Fletcher Street Cottage has become a trusted community hub, providing meals, showers, laundry facilities, case management, advocacy and referrals, while connecting people with housing, health and community services.
Fletcher Street Cottage Manager Damian Farrell said the security of tenure will have lasting benefits for everyone connected to the service.
"Support works best when people know they can come back tomorrow, next week and next month. Building trust takes time, and this agreement gives us the certainty to continue walking alongside people as they work towards greater stability.
It also strengthens our ability to work with partner organisations, volunteers and supporters who help make Fletcher Street Cottage such a welcoming and effective service. We sincerely thank Byron Shire Council for recognising the importance of this work and for their continued support."
For one regular service user, the announcement offers reassurance that the support they have come to rely on will continue to be there.

The new licence also strengthens Byron Community Centre's ability to invest in the future of the service, attract funding and grants, and continue responding to the growing challenges created by housing affordability and cost-of-living pressures across the region.
While the challenges facing many people in the Byron Shire and Northern Rivers region continue to evolve, one thing is now certain: Fletcher Street Cottage has a secure home for the next 15 years.
