Billabong Retreat: Reset, Refresh, Renew

By Jessica Humphries

Imagine quintessential Australian landscape that takes you back to simpler times. Lazy ferns circle the eucalypts that overlook a sparkling billabong begging you to jump in. But that’s really just the beginning of what Billabong Retreat in majestic Maraylya has to offer.

Think an abundant but totally up-to-you program that’s bursting with yoga (for all levels), meditation, and inspiring talks on everything from stress relief to emotional intelligence. For extra indulgence you can book in a treatment or three during your stay: massage, sauna sessions, reiki and more are all offered in the peaceful on site spa.

I’ll be honest: I’ve been to a lot of yoga retreat centres and at some point they all start to merge in my memory. Most centres boast scrumptious food and verdant views, and appeal to your stressed out corporates who are searching for something resembling peace. But every space has something special, and at Billabong you really can feel the love. The attitude is very ‘come as you are’ and there’s no pressure to fill your schedule while you’re there. Want to skip morning yoga for a sleep in? No worries – you probably need it! Is a laze by the mineral pool more appealing than a talk about self-care? Go for it! Having said that, they welcome yogis of all levels, so if you’re craving an extra chaturanga, that’s always on offer too.

The landscape invites self-reflection, and the limited mobile reception is a blessing in disguise. You might even skip the daily phone check all together in favour of a quiet cup of tea on the beautiful balcony, or a catnap in one of the many sleepy nooks nestled in the quiet common spaces.

The accommodation ranges from affordable lodge-share to nature enveloped cabins with your own private balcony bathtub. Need I say more?

The food deserves a big shout out, and is definitely some of the best retreat fare I’ve tried. Nutritious and delicious colours adorn your plant-based, SLOW (seasonal, local, organic, wholefoods) plate, leaving you satisfied and inspired. The head chef is next-level passionate about food and nutrition, with an enthusiasm so contagious you’ll be fantasising about a career change.

SLOW, delicious and nutritious food.

Perhaps one of Billabong’s most enticing features is its proximity to the city – just a one-hour train ride from Sydney central. Perfect for city siders who need a quick reset and reflect. But although it’s close you’ll feel worlds away from the hustle and bustle of city life - I promise.
