Byron Markets Go Back in Time for ‘Born in the 80s’ Celebration

The Cassettes

When: Sunday 5 October | Byron Bay Main Beach | 8am to 3pm

The Byron Community Market will step back into the 1980s on Sunday 5 October, with a special themed edition, “Born in the 80s”, celebrating the decade the Byron Community Centre first took on management of the iconic markets in 1987.

The event is also part of the 130-year celebrations of the Byron Community Centre, a milestone for one of the region’s most important community organisation.

The day will be a celebration of big hair, bright colours and even bigger tunes, with live performances from The Versace Boys, Lainie Godiva and ObiSun, plus a high-energy learn-to-dance 80’s workshop by Byron’s own troupe, The Cassettes.

Visitors are encouraged to dress in their best 80’s outfits, with on-the-spot prizes offered throughout the day for standout looks. A Tag & Win social media competition will also run, giving market-goers the chance to share their outfits or favourite stalls online for extra prizes.

Carl Taylor, Byron Markets Manager, said the event is about both fun and connection.

“Born in the 80s is a chance to celebrate the markets’ history while creating a vibrant and memorable day for our stallholders, locals and visitors. It’s all about bringing people together in true Byron spirit.”

Kate Love, Byron Community Centre Communications Manager, said the celebration ties directly to the Centre’s milestone year.

“As part of our 130 Years of Community Spirit celebrations in 2025, this market is a nod to the decade we began managing the Byron Community Markets. It’s a way to honour the past while inviting the community to celebrate the future with us.”
