2026 Volunteer Week: 275 Volunteers Power Byron’s Community Life
Byron Theatre Volunteers
From early morning breakfasts at Fletcher Street Cottage to live performances at Byron Theatre and the vibrant atmosphere of Byron Markets, there’s a quiet force behind it all - more than 275 volunteers helping bring Byron’s community to life.
In 2026, as Byron Community Centre celebrates 45 years of supporting the region, National Volunteer Week (18-24 May) offers a moment to recognise the people who show up, week after week, to support others, share their skills and stay connected.
Across the organisation, volunteers contribute in countless ways. Some welcome Byron Theatre audiences with a smile, others support people in need at Fletcher Street Cottage, while many work behind the scenes in marketing, reception, finance and administration, or help care for the gardens and community spaces that make the Byron Community Centre so welcoming.
Volunteer Coordinator Cathy Levins-Byres said volunteers are central to everything the organisation does.
“Our volunteers are the heart of Byron Community Centre. They show up with care, skill and a genuine desire to make a difference. Without them, much of what we do simply wouldn’t be possible. From meeting basic needs at Fletcher Street Cottage to ushering at Byron Theatre and welcoming people at reception, their impact is felt right across our community.”
The volunteer community spans all ages and backgrounds, from young people building confidence and experience to seniors sharing a lifetime of knowledge and connection.
For reception and Fletcher Street Cottage breakfast, showers and laundry volunteer Kerrie Ferney, the experience has been life changing.
“Volunteering is more rewarding than I ever imagined. It gave me purpose at a time that I really needed it, in giving back to my community. I have gained an abundance of opportunities and experiences. The dedication of Byron Community Centre and Fletcher Street Cottage towards supporting the community makes me proud to be a volunteer.”
As the Byron Community Centre marks 45 years throughout 2026, the message is simple: community is built by people and there’s always room for more.
