Community Gathers in Solidarity at Northern Rivers Vigil

The Northern Rivers community came together in large numbers at the Lismore Quad for a powerful Vigil honouring the 29 women and 9 children killed by violence so far in Australia this year, including 5 women and 2 children over the past week. Hosted by Women’s Health Northern Rivers (WHNR), the event created a moving space for reflection, remembrance, and collective healing.

The Vigil featured an exceptional lineup of speakers, including NSW Treaty Commissioner Naomi Moran, advocate and comedian Mandy Nolan, WHNR Acting CEO Emma Siegel, and representatives from Women Up North Housing, WDVCAS and ACON. Their words resonated deeply with attendees, offering truth‑telling, solidarity and a call to action.

A significant number of men attended the Vigil, standing in genuine allyship and reinforcing the message that domestic and family violence is a whole‑of‑community issue that requires collective responsibility and change.

The impactful art installation “Counting Dead Women”, created by Paulette Hayes, provided a confronting visual reminder of the lives lost and the urgency of ongoing prevention and early intervention efforts.

WHNR extends heartfelt thanks to the services who supported the event by providing resources and information on the night: Women Up North Housing, Mission Australia, Medicare Mental Health, ACON, Men and Family Centre. Their presence strengthened the sense of community connection and ensured attendees could access support pathways.

WHNR Acting CEO Emma Siegel said:

“Seeing our community show up in such strong numbers, including so many men, gives us real hope. When we stand together, we send a powerful message that violence has no place here, and that every woman and child deserves safety, dignity, and respect.”
