Hula Dance is Back at Byron Seniors Club
By Amanda Kuhn
Popular program returns in June after heartfelt feedback and strong demand from local seniors.
Following an overwhelmingly positive response from local participants, the Byron Community Centre will extend its free Hawaiian Hula Dance Classes for seniors with a new eight-week term beginning in June. The sessions are beginner-friendly and drop-ins are welcome.
Delivered as part of the Byron Seniors Club program, the original six-week course held across March and April received glowing feedback, with participants describing the experience as uplifting, healing and transformative.
Hula, often called the dance of aloha, is renowned for its ability to warm the heart and spark spontaneous smiles. Beyond its charm, hula offers numerous benefits combining gentle exercise with joyful self-expression. It’s a perfect fit for mature dancers seeking to stay active and connected.
Participants have spoken warmly about the impact of the program on their wellbeing. “I love the social connecting and the physical enjoyment,” said Shamana. “The classes are great for mind, body and soul for increased grace, suppleness, balance and expressiveness,” added another participant Jude. Others highlighted the emotional and mental benefits: “It’s like meditation,” shared Paula, while Marguerita described the experience as one that brings “peace of mind overriding mundane stresses.”
The program is led by Lilith from the Byron Bay Hula/Mana Aloha troupe. Known for bringing the spirit of the islands to local events and celebrations, the troupe’s teaching approach has also been praised. “Being Indigenous, these classes are very spiritual to me,” said Avriil. “The teacher is beautiful and calming, and I love the way she teaches.”
The June - July Term will once again be held at Byron Theatre and is free for all Byron Seniors Club members.
