The NSW Great Walks showcase the state’s stunning natural beauty and growing appeal as a destination for nature-based travel. Seasoned hikers and newcomers can come and explore seven breathtaking multi-day walks across regional NSW, with something for everyone - whether you’re seeking a challenging adventure or a more leisurely getaway.

From the tranquil beaches of the Sapphire Coast to the rugged cliffs of the Blue Mountains, NSW Great Walks highlights 275km of recently opened walking tracks, offering a diverse mix of landscapes, including ancient rainforests, alpine peaks and pristine coastlines. You walk through some of the state’s most iconic natural wonders, with options for self-guided or guided tours, as well as camping or accommodation for overnight stays.

The campaign’s featured walks include Snowies Alpine Walk (Snowy Mountains), Light to Light (Sapphire Coast), Murramarang South Coast Walk, Tomaree Coastal Walk (Port Stephens), Grand Cliff Top Walk (Blue Mountains), Green Gully Track (Northern Tablelands), and our local Gidjuum Gulganyi Walk (Tweed/Byron Hinterland).

Gidjuum Gulganyi Walk

Lush, green rainforest – check. Majestic waterfalls – check. Dramatic valleys and peaks sculpted by an ancient volcano – check. The Gidjuum Gulganyi Walk is the ultimate rainforest adventure.

Located in the heart of the Tweed Byron Hinterland, on Bundjalung Country, this newly established 42km track weaves through Mount Jerusalem National Park, Nightcap National Park and Whian Whian State Conservation Area.

A challenging hike with stunning rewards, the trail takes you through the remnants of a long-extinct volcano, offering breathtaking views from high ridge lookouts and refreshing dips in pristine waterholes along the way. This four-day journey invites you to unwind in the tranquillity of the rainforest, with exclusive campgrounds and upgraded facilities reserved just for walkers.

Whether you choose a guided or self-guided trek, immerse yourself in this vibrant, diverse landscape and connect deeply with nature on every step of this unforgettable adventure.

A New Path

Minister for the Environment, Penny Sharpe, highlighted the role of national parks in the state’s tourism economy, saying:

“National parks provide a unique way to support regional businesses and jobs, while giving people access to nature’s beauty. These walks will open up new opportunities for visitors to explore NSW in an unforgettable way.”

Minister for Tourism and Jobs, Steve Kamper, added:

“NSW is home to some of the most diverse national parks on Earth. Our Great Walks campaign will turn these remarkable tracks into bucket-list destinations, drawing more visitors and contributing millions to regional NSW’s economy.”
