Rally: Fix the Housing Crisis

3pm Saturday 9 September, Byron Bay Main Beach

The Seeding has teamed up with The Greens, Reclaim Our Recovery Lismore and Get A Room to call an end to the housing preciarity we currently face.

We all deserve a secure place to live: housing is a human right.

Rents are skyrocketing, interest rates are rising, evictions are more common than ever before, and Byron Bay has the most rough sleepers in all of New South Wales, yet both the federal and state Labor goverment are doing nothing about it and we have 1 million empty houses in this country!

Meanwhile, the most expensive climate catastrophe in Australian history, the 2022 floods just displaced thousands of people from the Northern Rivers community as their homes and businesses were devastated by the largest natural disaster in Aus this century.

And this is only the beginning, as the climate emergency worsens, more and more people will be affected and displaced by floods and fires, only aggravating the dire housing crisis we already face.

It's time to hold those at the top accountable and demand housing for all. United we are strong, so with your help, everyone can get a secure place to live.

On Saturday 9 September, The Seeding, a revolutionary band of activators and changemakers, in collaboration with The Greens, Reclaim Our Recovery Lismore and the National Union of Students’ Get A Room campaign, implore us all to join the state-wide* demonstration to FIX THE HOUSING CRISIS ahead of the upcoming NSW state budget.

We invite everyone in the Bundjalung Minjungbal Arakwal community to join us on the grass at Byron Bay Main Beach at 3pm Saturday 9 August, to demand that the NSW and federal governments take action to:

  • Freeze rents now

  • Build public housing

  • Raise rent assistance

  • Tax property developers

  • Strengthen renters’ rights

  • End for-profit student accommodation

  • Implement a corporate super-profits tax

  • Fund community lead recovery for climate chaos related disasters (eg 2022 Northern Rivers floods)

No one should get seconds until everyone has a house.

We'll then march through the streets of Byron, ending our rally at an empty house to highlight the atrocity that we have 1 million empty homes in this country, yet so many of us are homeless or in housing insecurity.

Bring placards, signs, and anything else to make your voice heard. This is what democracy looks like in this system - we must rally together to build a better world!

Speakers: Mandy Nolan (The Greens), Chels Hood Withey (The Seeding) and Andy George (Reclaim Our Recovery Lismore)
Music: The Seeding, Sam Mac, tashmeen and Dave Houston.

*This rally is running in conjunction with FIX THE HOUSING CRISIS rally on Gadigal land at Town Hall, Sydney on the same day:
