Seductive New Sounds from Melbourne Duo

Debut Single ‘Whole Year’ a Hidden Gem

Hazy, steady and seductive - the debut single from Melbourne duo/couple ‘East Notion’ is all this and more.

East Notion are born from leader Tom Crawford’s endless months tampering, looping sounds and trying to transform ideas onto tape in his small bedroom studio outside of Melbourne, in a little town called Bacchus Marsh.

”I spent a little time playing around with certain chords and loops, that made me feel certain ways. But taking ideas and finishing a full song with lyrics is another story.”

The smokey, breathy vocals on their debut single “Whole Year” comes from Tom’s partner (Jordyn Keating) who originally knocked back the idea of singing, but later conceded after a helping push.

“Jords wasn’t real keen on singing in the beginning, but after knowing her ability and the sound of her voice, I gave her a little push in the right direction. The vocals were written and sung in about an hour before going out for dinner one night so it’s quite funny in that respect.”

Constantly pulling in and releasing the tension, this track sits on a bed of uneasiness and restlessness yet glides into a steady comforting feeling of warmth. Having assistance from Jeff Zeigler (The War On Drugs Engineer) in the mixing process, Tom spoke of inspiration from the thriving Philadelphia scene and how the songs coming out of there feel (Kurt Vile, War On Drugs, Mike Polizze).

“I had Jeff (Zeigler) help mix throughout the process and we have a few more songs cooking up that we’re looking forward to, it’s good to finally start putting ideas together. I am obsessed with the scene in Philly, so I contacted Jeff who works with a lot of those guys.”

With everything going on in the world, it’s good to find hidden gems like this to help forget everything, even for just a few minutes.

East Notion’s debut single “Whole Year” is out everywhere now and is serving as an exciting taste of what’s to come.
