The Byron Bay Film Festival Announces The David Stratton Best Documentary Award

The Byron Bay Film Festival (BBFF) is proud to announce the introduction of the David Stratton Best Documentary Award, honouring the life and legacy of one of Australia’s most respected and influential voices in cinema. The award will recognise the most outstanding feature-length documentary in competition at this year’s festival, regardless of country of origin.

David Stratton was a fierce champion of both Australian and international cinema. Throughout his distinguished career as a film critic, festival director and broadcaster, he introduced audiences to remarkable stories from around the world. His acclaimed SBS documentary series, David Stratton’s Stories of Australian Cinema, explored the richness and diversity of our national film culture.

Beyond fiction, Stratton was a dedicated advocate for the documentary form, often championing works that pushed creative boundaries or illuminated urgent social, cultural and political issues.

BBFF Festival Director Jaimee Skippon-Volke said the new award reflects the festival’s commitment to celebrating documentaries as vital works of art and agents of change.

“David Stratton’s name is synonymous with integrity, insight, and a deep love of cinema,” Jaimee said. “By naming this award in his honour, we’re recognising his remarkable contribution to film culture and his unwavering support for documentary filmmakers worldwide.”

The judging panel for the inaugural award will include Margaret Pomeranz, David Stratton’s long-time on-air partner, alongside esteemed actor Jack Thompson and Festival Director Jaimee Skippon-Volke.

“I’m very touched to be invited by the Byron Bay Film Festival to be part of the judging panel for the inaugural David Stratton Best Documentary Award,” Margaret said. “It’s a celebration of both David and the medium he loved.”

The inaugural David Stratton Best Documentary Award will be presented during the 2025 Byron Bay International Film Festival, running from October 17–26, 2025.
