Byron Beachside Market Showcases Local Artisan Talent with New Makers Club
New Byron Beachside Makers Club debuts with weaving workshops, live music and holiday fun by Main Beach.
The Byron Beachside Market is set to launch an exciting new initiative, the Byron Beachside Makers Club, when it returns to Main Beach on Saturday 27 September.
Exclusive to the Byron Beachside Market, the Makers Club aims to showcase the creativity and skills of local makers and creators through interactive talks and workshops. Each instalment will give visitors to our markets the opportunity to connect with artisans, hear their stories and take part in hands-on experiences.
The first Makers Club event will be hosted by Jugan Dandii, a weaving collective led by Nyangbal Bundjalung woman Aunty Tania Marlowe and fibre artist/educator Debra Cole. Known for their collaborative community works, including a striking weaving installation at Ballina Airport, they have been sharing the restorative practice of natural fibre weaving with communities across the region for more than a decade. Their work focuses on empowering individuals and groups to explore woven arts for both creative expression and wellbeing, while fostering connection to community, country and culture.
Visitors can join Jugan Dandii at the market for free learn-to-weave classes starting at 9.30am, as well as an open drop-in weaving and yarning space offering mini sessions in basic weaving techniques with natural, accessible materials. These tasters are suitable for all ages and experience levels.
Natwah Petruszka, Byron Community Market Coordinator, said the Makers Club is an exciting evolution for the artisan-only Byron Beachside Market.
“The Makers Club brings something new and enriching to our much-loved Beachside Market. It gives locals and visitors the chance to go beyond browsing and really connect with the creativity behind the stalls. Launching with Jugan Dandii feels especially meaningful, as their weaving embodies culture, community and connection, the very essence of what our markets are about.”
Held during the school holidays, the Byron Beachside Market will also feature a vibrant line-up of free live music from local favourites Hayley Grace, Guy Kachel and Tim Stokes, creating the perfect backdrop to a day by the sea.
