Houses and Horses for Dad explores grief, care and belonging
Artist Sally Anderson brings together houses, horses, motherhood and family history in a deeply personal group exhibition exploring how love and loss move across generations.
Australian artist Sally Anderson presents Houses and Horses for Dad, a curated group exhibition opening at Edwina Corlette Gallery in Brisbane this November.
Presented in the year following the death of Anderson’s father and shortly after the birth of her daughter, the exhibition reflects on the interconnected experiences of motherhood and daughterhood, caring and being cared for.
Recurring images of houses and horses become allegories for shelter, endurance, containment and belonging. Drawing on Anderson’s upbringing and the enduring importance of horses within her family history, the exhibition explores the cyclical nature of grief, care and domestic life.
The works consider the rhythms, rituals and repetitions of raising a child and maintaining a household, as well as the ways the outside world enters the home through windows, gardens, devices, objects, paintings and images.
Anderson’s paintings appear alongside works by invited artists whose practices engage with or sit beside these themes. Each artist brings individual meanings and experiences to the exhibition while contributing to a wider reflection on personal and collective memory.
Together, the works explore how family histories are carried across generations, transformed through acts of care and continually reimagined through relationships between the past, present and future.
